* Josiah does not appear to be related to settler John Pierce and his nephew Jonas Pierce. The 1850 census and the record of Josiah's death differ on his age. He seems to have been born between 1803 and 1811 in Stoneham or Woburn MA. Those towns are next to each other so that difference is not significant to me. His marriage to Polly took place in Westminster where he was referred to as being from Woburn. Another record in Westminster gives a Samuel Pierce of Woburn marrying Polly Meriam in 1829. The assumption would be that Josiah and Samuel were brothers. Samuel's wife died in 1831, age 36. A widowed Samuel Pierce who was born in Woburn circa 1800 died in Hubbardston MA (the same place as Josiah) in 1873. His parents were given as England-born Nathan and Sarah. This is my guess as to Josiah's parents. The fact that they were English might be a good reason why there are no Woburn/Stoneham records for Josiah or Samuel.
